Alouli Hinne

A mime play with Egyptian Actors [Cairo 2011-2012]
A play about tolerance made in times of revolution.

ogether with a group of Egyptian actors, Guido Kleene and Jochem Stavenuiter created the mime performance Alouli Hinne (They said it ‘s here) following an invitation from the Cairo Acting School.

Alouli Hinne is a performance that deals with issues of tolerance and touching.
What to do if a stranger falls asleep on your shoulder? How to deal with behavior that goes beyond your limit. Alouli Hinne investigates the thin line between accepting differences and shouting each other’s brains out.

The performance was created during a couple of workshops in Egypt in 2011 – and was interrupted by the revolution.

Cairo Acting School is a school for mime-acting directed by Hany El Mettanawy and Salam Yousry – CAS provides workshops in modern mime for professional actors. Jochem Stavenuiter is one of the teachers in the school.

Background

The Cairo Acting School (EGY) and Compagnie Dakar(NL).

The performance is part of a long-term exchange between the Cairo Acting School (EGY – Hany ElMetannawy) and the Dutch partners Compagnie Dakar(NL) and mime group Bambie (NL). The collaboration started in 2005 – and resulted in several workshops and plays from professional actors in Cairo, Egypt.

Hany ElMetennawy and Salam Yousri founded the Cairo Acting School. Hany ElMetannawy is an Egyptian actor and theatre maker – who has been working for many years in the Cairo theatre scene. He founded CAS with the goal of introducing modern mime techniques in Egyptian theatre. Salam Yousri is one of the most innovative contemporary Egyptian theatre directors.

During the rehearsals of the play in january 2011, the Egyptian revolution started – in which both actors and directors participated. The theme of this ‘mime’ play is our mutual question about tolerance: The initial premiere was in May 2011 in Cairo in a closed ‘theatre’ version. In 2012 – we continued our mutual exchange – and we made a new -site specific- version of our play – as originaly intended.

This site-specific play was shown in Egypt and on the Oerol festival in Terschelling (the Netherlands).

The Performance

The site specific play Alouli Hinne, is performed and made by professional Egyptian actors and theatre-makers from the Cairo Acting School.

The performance is a movement based theatre performance on tolerance. The key topic is ‘the desire to tolerate – without knowing how to do so’. In comical physical scenes and absurd theatrical situations, the play depicts dilemmas on how to deal with differences and tolerance.

During the process of rehearsing the play – we were confronted with some of these dilemmas about tolerance and accepting differences. To speak out or not – became a political deed with far reaching consequences. Some of these doubts and divisions, become visible in Aloudi Hinne.
